What is this PDF grayscale tool?
A free, browser-based tool that converts the pages of a color PDF to grayscale, or to pure black & white. There's nothing to install and no sign-up — and because everything runs locally in your browser, your file is never uploaded to a server.
How to convert a PDF to grayscale
- Upload your PDF by dragging it in or clicking the upload area.
- Choose a mode: “Grayscale” for shades of gray, or “Black & white” for a high-contrast two-tone result.
- Press “Convert & download” to get the converted PDF.
Good to know before you convert
To recolor every element reliably, this tool rasterizes each page into an image. That means the text becomes part of the image — it is no longer selectable, searchable, or copyable — and the resulting file size can grow compared with the original. If you need to keep selectable text, this approach isn't the right fit.
Common use cases
- Preparing a color document for black & white printing to save on color toner.
- Toning down distracting colors so a document reads as clean and neutral.
- Converting a scan to high-contrast black & white for clearer copies.
