What is this discount & margin calculator?
A free, browser-based calculator that bundles the discount math you usually do in a spreadsheet onto one page. Enter a list price, a discount (as a rate or an amount), and a cost, and it computes the discount rate, the discounted price, the post-discount gross margin (in both amount and percent), and how much profit the discount costs you. Each result shows the exact formula. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your numbers are never uploaded.
The formulas
- Discount rate = Discount amount ÷ List price.
- Discount amount = List price × Discount rate.
- Discounted price = List price − Discount amount.
- Gross margin (amount) = Discounted price − Cost.
- Gross margin (%) = Gross margin ÷ Discounted price.
- Profit decrease vs no discount = Discount amount (cost is unchanged).
How to use it
- Enter the list price, then a discount as either a rate (%) or an amount.
- Add the cost to also see the post-discount gross margin and profit decrease.
- Read the results on the right — each shows the formula used.
Common use cases
- Checking whether a promotional discount still leaves a healthy margin.
- Translating a customer's requested discount amount into a rate (and vice versa).
- Quantifying how much profit a planned price cut will cost per unit.
