What is this reading time estimator?
A free, browser-based tool that estimates how long a piece of text takes to read. Paste an article and it counts Japanese characters and English words separately, then turns them into a reading time using speeds you can adjust (200 words/min and 500 chars/min by default). It also shows character, word, and line counts. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box on the left.
- Read the estimated reading time and the character / word / line counts on the right.
- Adjust the reading speeds (Japanese chars/min and English words/min) to match your audience — the estimate updates instantly.
Common use cases
- Adding a “~X min read” label to the top of a blog post.
- Planning content length before writing or briefing a writer.
- Checking that an email, script, or landing page fits the time you have.
