What is this Kana to Romaji converter?
A free, browser-based tool that converts Japanese kana (hiragana and katakana) into romaji. Choose between the Hepburn system (shi, tsu, chi, fu, ji), used on passports and signage, or the Kunrei system (si, tu, ti, hu, zi), used in schools and the JIS standard. It handles the sokuon (っ → double consonant), the syllabic n (ん → n / n'), yoon digraphs (きゃ → kya), and the long-vowel mark (ー). Everything runs locally in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Type or paste your kana (hiragana or katakana) into the box on the left.
- Choose the romanization system — Hepburn or Kunrei.
- Copy the romaji result or download it as a text file.
Common use cases
- Romanizing names and place names for passports, forms, or English-language documents.
- Preparing romaji labels or slugs for URLs, file names, and data exports.
- Helping learners read kana by showing the Hepburn or Kunrei spelling.
